Most Torontonians will admit that right now, we have no good major league sports teams. This goes for Football, Baseball**, Basketball, and especially, ICE HOCKEY!
The Toronto Maple Leafs last won the Stanley Cup in 1967. The Maple Leafs belong to Canada's largest city, Toronto. The team was one of the glorious "Original 6" NHL teams. So, at the time of writing, Toronto has not won anything for 45 years. The main passtime for fans is not cheering, it's jeering.
And yet, for all that time, their games have enjoyed pretty much 100% attendance. How can this be?
** Okay, okay, the Jays have potential this year, but don't hold your breath!
Wow! I was revisiting my own inactive blog here, and boy oh boy, how things have changed in the intervening years. For the better, by far. Each of our major league teams has had a win, and the Leafs are poised. Way to go! I almost feel guilty for suggesting corruption. Almost. Really, don't you feel corruption is rife in any monetized area now?
ReplyDeleteAnd it's often in plain sight ... HSBC - caught laundering billions of dollars - still in business! And Trudeau apparently thinks its okay to take huge gifts from a registered government lobbyist! I don't care how good the Aga Khan might be, will Trudeau also take gifts from Putin? He seems to to have no regard for law.
I thought of a way to think about the damage of corruption, so: One way to frame corruption is -
"The larger the scoundrel, the higher the price."
You know - if you or I rip off someone else for a small amount, the damage will ripple, but not much. And shame on us. Now, if Donald Trump let's it slip that he thinks half of Africa's nations are shithole countries, well that's a different kettle of fish. A really smelly one. There's only one shithole country I can think of, and it starts with U and ends with A.
Always with love,
Martin
(I'm counting reaching the playoffs as a win)
